Birth of a Clan

A Clan?

You're running down a narrow cavern carrying a flag on one hand and a rocket launcher on the other.  The enemy is closing in like a pack of hungry wolves ready to tear you apart.  A teammate is running alongside in hopes that you return the flag to base.  You gain a sense of relief as you see friendly snipers positioned on the cliffs ready to support you.  Your almost there, as deadly explosions and shrapnel begin to fill the surroundings.   They're getting closer as you hear the many footsteps from behind.  The action is intense and the drama is nerve racking.    Your clan is depending on you...

Playing games on the internet have provided a great source of entertainment for millions of gamers around the worrld.   The level of excitement that already encompasses the multiplayer arena has been enhanced even further with the emergence of team based games and modifications.  When I first played the Quake1 modification of capture the flag, it opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that team based games had to offer.  With the release of Team Fortress 2 and Tribes 2, there is a lot to be excited about.  Team based games are going to get hotter than ever this year.

I'm part of a clan called: Fading Mirage and we compete on a weekly basis at teamplay.net.  You may be wondering and asking yourself, "what does a clan have anything to do with gaming?"  Lets take a look at the dictionary to find a general definition of clan.

clan (kln)
n.
  1. A traditional social unit in the Scottish Highlands, consisting of a number of families claiming a common ancestor and following the same hereditary chieftain.
  2. A division of a tribe tracing descent from a common ancestor.
  3. A large group of relatives, friends, or associates.

[Middle English from Scottish Gaelic clann, family, from Old Irish cland, offspring, from Latin planta, plant, sprout; see plat- in Indo-European Roots.]

Whoa!!! Hold on a minute here!  I'm not Scottish, and I'm certainly part of no clan that has ancestral roots.  Most of us are friends or associates who like to play a common game together as a team.  In our case,  Fading Mirage mainly plays Unreal Tournament's "Capture the Flag" against opponents around the world.
